At last: Nutritional ketosis

It took one whole week after my trip to CT to find my way back into nutritional ketosis (1,5-3mmol/L)! But now I am here… This means:

  • Extra energy
  • Less needed sleep
  • Burning fat at maximum
  • Not so hungry
  • Optimal fuel for the brain
  • Bad breath… 😉

So how can you turbo your way into nutritional ketosis?

  • Eat lots, LOTS of fat (butter, ghee, coconut oil)
  • Avoid: berries, nuts, fruit, alkohol, too much dairy
  • Bullet coffee helps
  • Eat only 2-3 times a day

In South Africa this is where you can get hold of a blood keton measurer:

M-KEM, Durban Road. (At the Durban Road off-ramp from N1 heading out in direction of Paarl).
Price: R149.95
B-Ketone strips (Box of 10).
Price: R129.90
That’s R12.99 per strip!

In Sweden the strips cost R30 each… But it is a pricey hobby, but for me, so worth it. It is very motivating to keep track of what you eat and how it affects your body and definately helps weight loss!

  • I’ve just moved to Sweden and can’t find ketosis sticks. Could you tell me where you buy them? Online shopping would be better if possible.

    • Ketosis sticks (urin sticks) are available at the pharmacy… The blood keton measuring sticks and monitor can be ordered via my website, the Swedish version, lifezone.se on the right of the page you will see ‘adverts’ for them. Best of luck!

  • Hi Monique

I’m very interested to hear if you’re experiencing any negative effects of being in ketosis. I’ve been in ketosis for some weeks now and I continue not to feel completely on top. I’ve tried adding salt to my three daily meals and started taking a magnesium supplement a few days ago to counter my muscles twitches and generally tired legs. I can relate to not needing to sleep as much and my brain is functioning fine but I still kind of like my body should be more energised while I’m at work.
On the other hand I dont really have a problem of cycling to and from work (around 10k in total).

Do you supplement with salt/sodium/broth, magnesium or potassium? I’m also thinking that it could be related to a too low fat intake as I’ve lost weight from around 58kg to 52kg while going into ketosis (and actually more before entering ketosis). I dont feel hunger which I think might be some of the reason as I’m maybe not eating as much as I should. Do you have any other idea of what could be going on?

    • Sorry to hear, I don’t have any negative effects, the opposite in fact – very positive. The only thing is the taste in my mouth and my breath :(!
I do supplement with salt, magnesium, Vit-D and omega 3… Could you be going through the ‘transmission stage’? More fat? Hope the feelings inpmrove! Your body will tell you when to eat… One to two times a day is not unusaul for someone in ketosis… Just make sure you get sufficient fat in though! 🙂

      • Hi Monique,

Thank you for the reply! I have a few follow-up questions 🙂

How much salt do you roughly supplement with each day? Do you just do it in the form of adding salt to your meals?
Having thought more about going through the transition phase, I think you’re right. I’m probably not as far as I thought myself right now. I do think that I need to pay more attention to my fat intake, especially after seeing that your bullet coffee has 40g of butter 🙂 I’m quite strict about only eating three times each day and I have no problem with that, I dont feel hunger anytime of the day. I’ve tried a few times to feel hungry (but not in the hangry way) after 10-12 hours of fasting – maybe that could be a sign that I need to eat more fat.

Do you track how many grams of protein and fat you get each day?

I don’t question the positive effects of ketosis, I’m feeling a lot of them already 🙂

Sorry to bother you with all these questions but it’s so difficult to find someone who has hands on experience with ketosis who can give some sound advice. I’ve both of Phinney and Volek’s books but its just not the same 🙂

  • Hi Monique ,
Very interested in reading your blog.
You mentioned to “Avoid: berries, nuts, fruit, alkohol, too much dairy.”
Can you give us a sample menu of what you’re eating ? I know avocados are really a fruit ; do you avoid them also? No nuts, OK then what about seeds like sunflower seeds ?
What dairy do you eat and how much?

    Thanks,
    ~Leo

    • Hi Leo!
I advise to avoid berries and nuts if your aim is to loose weight, or if you due to illnes for eg. diabets are changing your eating habits. I always avoid fruit, due to the amount of fructose. Alkohol in moderation… Dairy same, in moderation, although I totally approve of butter and ghee.

I do eat and recommend avocadoes. Nuts are nourishing but also contain lots of carbs – watch out, Maccadamia are best choice here.
Seeds as sunflower, pumpkin and sesame in moderation, if I bake my crisp bread then I use them, maybe in sallads occasionaly.
I do eat cheese, cream, butter, creme fraiche when it comes to dairy.

Hope this has been a help! 🙂

  • Hello Monique. I went to M-Kem just yesterday and was told that they do not have this device due to the cost of it – apparently too expensive and not worth stocking for them?? Can you maybe put me in contact with yuur source of info here in Cape Town so I can check with them? Much appreciated. lieslx (film crue at SSISA and HELP launch)

Whoever you spoke to at M-Kem was talking nonsense! They did not understand what you wanted. I must emphasize, however, that what I bought measures both glocose as well as ketones. FreeStyle Optium. (Not the same model as illustrated by Monique above but looks identical).
Just to clarify, when I was there, they only had 2 in stock. I bought one and discovered the next day that the box had been slit open (seal broken) and then the top of the box was sticky taped back on – the wrong way round too!!
I returned that one and bought the only other in stock. I then warned them that there could be a demand as the ‘Tim Noakes diet’ was causing waves! The lady who handled the return of the opened box and gave me credit said she would make a note of that for re-ordering the product.
Contact me at eileensodyssey@gmail.com if you would like to.
      Best, Eileen
