LCHF FAQ - Frequently asked questions about LCHF
HOW; WHAT; WHEN; WHO....
LCHF - low carb high fat!
How should I eat? Can anyone eat a high fat diet? How many meals a day should I eat?
I say that anyone can eat LCHF, exception is those that have done a gastric bypass stomach operation and those that are vegans.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions (vanligaste frågor)
- How many meals per day should I eat?
When you eat LCHF you increase the amount of fat you eat, this gives a longer feeling of satisfactiona and dampens hunger/cravings.
Inbetween snacking you can skip all together, with ease. You won't be hungry in the same way as you are when you eat a diet with carbs.
If and when you are hungry, eat! If you are not hungry then don't eat. 2-3 meals a day is the normal for someone eating LCHF.
- Can anybody eat LCHF? What about children?
Yes, everyone can. LCHF food is natural food, our initial diet from thousands of years back. Children can eat LCHF too, although children that are active burn the carbs they eat in a different more affective way than adults.
There is so much hidden sugars in foods, especially in foods that we give our children, for instance tomatoe sauce/ketchup, juice, fruit youghurts, 'natural' sweets etc...
- Can I eat fruit?
Fruit is fructose (sugar), the most fattening of sugars there is. The fruits today are not at all as healthy as we assume. They have been manipulated over many years to become bigger and sweeter and don't have as many vitamins as we initially thought. Vitamins and minerals you get from eating good meat, fish, eggs, cabbage and nuts.
If you are sensitive to sugar, that it triggers your sweet tooth then I advise you to avoid fruit, if you have excessive weight, avoid fruit. If you want to gain wait - eat fruit.
If life feels impossible without fruit then choose wisely and seldom, and preferably apple, orange, pear... Avoid melons, grapes, bananas, mango, pineapple as much as you can. These are all very sweet.
- How much fat should I eat?
When you remove the carbs you MUST add fat instead. You can increase the protein amount slightly, but it's the fat that should be instead of the carbs. Fry all food in fat, add extra fat on your plate for e.g. a click of butter or majonaisse - at every meal even with an egg breakfast!
- Which fat should I eat?
Coconut oil is the healthiest fat you can consume. Coconut oil tolerates heat better than any other fat (which means it does not become transfats as easy as other oils). Make sure it is an organic coconut oil.
Otherwise pure proper butter is good for making food. Olivoil should not be heated as it quickly becomes trans fats.
You also want to decrease our intake of omega-6, which is still essential for your body but not in the huge proportions that modern people consume it today. Omega-6 is inflammatory and oils like sunflowerseed oil, peanut oil are very high in omega-6 as is all margarines.
Avoid all margarines, industrial butter immitations with large amounts of omega-6. They taste bad and statistics show that margarines increase astma, allergies and other inflammatory illnesses.
Majonaisse (preferablyt home made) is a good source of fat. Bearnaisse sauce, home made is also a good alternativ. Look out for the 'ready made' ones which can have glutamate and butter aromas - this we want to avoid.
- The brain need carbohydrates, doesn't it?
The brain need glucose. Carbohyrates becomes glucose instantly in the stomach. It provides the brain with glocose yes, but the rest becomes fat. The liver on the other hand converts fat and protein to the exact amount of glucose that the brain needs no excess.
This proces is called glyconeogeneses
This is a simplified answer to your question.
- What will happen with my cholesterol and blood from the LCHF diet?
I did bloodtests and checked my cholesterol very recently and my values were so perfect that the dr had hardly ever seen such excellent results before.
Cholesterol is necessary for life, without it you die. Your HDL you want to be high, it's healing for the body, the LDL is known as the 'bad' cholesterol (although we only have one cholesterol) but small and compact LDL we want to avoid. This is from sugars. Here you can read more about research on cholesterol: Ravnskovs homepage. Dr Andreas Eenfeldt is anohter doktor who publishes lots of research on the topic, so far his page is mainly in Swedish: kostdoktorn.se
